What Does Farm Pack Insurance Cover?

Farm pack insurance may cover selected farm buildings, machinery, fencing, theft, liability, land transit and business interruption, but the exact cover depends on which sections, assets, locations and limits are listed on the policy schedule.

A farm pack is modular rather than one fixed bundle. Cover for a shed doesn't automatically mean machinery breakdown is included, and cover for livestock in transit doesn't necessarily include livestock mortality on the farm. Each section answers a different question: what is insured, where it is insured, which event caused the loss and whether the relevant section appears on the schedule.

For a full explanation of how a farm pack is structured, see what is farm pack insurance in Australia.

Farm pack insurance coverage summary

  • Farm pack insurance can combine selected cover for farm property, machinery, fencing, liability, theft, transit and interruption
  • The policy schedule determines which sections, locations and assets are insured
  • Machinery damage and machinery breakdown are separate coverage questions
  • Livestock transit does not automatically mean livestock mortality is covered
  • Crops, flood, farm vehicles and domestic property may require specific sections or separate policies
  • Limits, sub-limits, excesses and exclusions apply to each section

Farm pack coverage and common limitations

Asset or event May be covered Common limitation
Shed damaged by fire or storm Repair or rebuilding under farm property Shed and location must be listed; current sum insured matters
Boundary fencing damaged by an insured event Repair or replacement costs A fencing sub-limit or first-loss basis may cap the payout
Tractor damaged in a fire Machinery repair or replacement Must be listed or included under the property section
Tractor stops due to internal mechanical failure Repair under machinery breakdown Breakdown section must be selected; wear and tear is excluded
Machinery or tools stolen from locked storage Theft loss and forced-entry damage Security conditions, per-item limits and proof of ownership may apply
Visitor injured on the farm Legal liability and defence costs Farming and visitor activities must be declared
Produce causes illness in a consumer Products liability Product type and operations must fall within the insured business
Livestock injured during road transport Land-transit section Transit section and insured event must apply
Fire stops dairy or packing operations Income loss or additional costs Business interruption must be selected and linked to an insured event
Cyberattack corrupts farm management records Usually outside standard farm pack Separate cyber or electronic-data cover may be required

What may farm pack insurance cover?

The sections available vary between insurers and policies. What applies to a particular farm depends on which sections are selected, which assets are declared and the insurer's policy wording.

Farm buildings and infrastructure. Sheds, silos, dairies, woolsheds, workshops, yards, pumps, irrigation systems and fencing. Buildings may need to be individually listed or included within an agreed property category. Stored produce such as hay, grain and chemicals may also be covered under the farm property or farm contents section where declared with a value.

Machinery, plant and equipment. Tractors, headers, sprayers, pumps, implements. Insured-event cover responds to fire, storm, collision and theft. This is property damage cover, not breakdown cover. A pump destroyed by fire is a different question from a pump that stops due to internal failure.

Machinery breakdown where selected as an optional section. This may respond to sudden and unforeseen internal mechanical or electrical failure. Wear and tear is excluded. Missing or outdated machinery details on the schedule may affect cover or the amount payable.

Theft or attempted theft of farm property, stored produce and equipment. Per-item and aggregate sub-limits are common. Security and storage conditions may affect claim eligibility.

Public and products liability for third-party injury and property damage from farming operations. May cover escaped livestock, spray drift, visitor injuries and produce-related illness, subject to policy terms. Farm-gate sales, farm stays and contractor activity may require specific disclosure on the policy.

Livestock or farm goods in land transit. Cattle to market, hay between properties, machinery between blocks. Transit cover is a specific section with its own insured events. Livestock kept on the property is a different exposure from livestock on a truck.

Business interruption or additional operating costs after an insured event disrupts operations. The indemnity period (how long the policy pays) should match a realistic recovery timeline. A 3-month period won't cover a 12-month rebuild.

The farmhouse and personal contents may also sit within the farm pack where a domestic property section is selected and the dwelling is listed on the schedule as an insured location.

Common farm pack insurance inclusions

Depending on the selected sections, a farm pack may include cover for:

  • Insured farm buildings, contents and stored produce
  • Fencing and fixed infrastructure (subject to sub-limits)
  • Machinery damaged by insured events such as fire, storm or theft
  • Machinery breakdown where the breakdown section is selected
  • Theft or attempted theft with evidence of forced entry
  • Public and products liability for farming operations
  • Livestock or farm goods in land transit
  • Business interruption or increased operating costs following an insured event
  • Domestic buildings and contents where selected
  • Farm vehicles under a farm motor section where included

What does farm pack insurance commonly exclude?

Farm pack insurance is designed around insurable events, not farming risk in general. Common exclusions include wear and tear, gradual deterioration, poor maintenance, faulty workmanship, deliberate or fraudulent acts, unexplained disappearance, and undeclared locations or assets.

Drought and poor seasonal conditions sit outside the policy entirely. Broader biological and crop risks follow the same logic. Crop failure is only covered if you add a specific crop section or arrange a standalone crop policy, and livestock disease or on-property mortality requires a livestock section to be selected. On the equipment and vehicle side, machinery breakdown needs its own breakdown section, while registered vehicles and anything used on public roads may need a farm motor section or separate motor policy. Flood is worth checking early, because availability and definitions vary between insurers and locations. Work-related employee injuries fall under workers compensation rather than the farm pack, and cyber incidents or electronic data loss require separate cover.

If an exclusion affects your operation, ask about it before binding the policy.

Four checks that determine whether an asset is covered

A broad coverage list is only the starting point. Knowing what's listed on a policy is one thing. Knowing whether it will actually respond is another. Most coverage disputes come back to one of these four questions.

1. Is the right section selected? A tractor may appear on the machinery list, but internal breakdown isn't covered unless machinery breakdown is a selected section on the policy.

2. Is the correct location declared? A shed on a leased or secondary property may not be covered unless that location is listed on the schedule.

3. Is the cause of damage an insured event? A pump damaged by fire is a different question from a pump that stops after years of use. The policy responds to defined events, not to everything that goes wrong.

4. Is the value or sub-limit sufficient? A covered asset can still leave a shortfall if its sum insured or category sub-limit is below the current replacement cost.

Farm pack claim examples

These scenarios are illustrative only. They do not represent real clients or confirmed outcomes. All claims are subject to policy terms, conditions, limits and exclusions.

Scenario Section that may respond Key condition
Storm damages a machinery shed and equipment inside Farm property and contents Assets and location must be insured at current values
Header suffers sudden internal electrical failure Machinery breakdown Breakdown section must be selected; wear and tear excluded
Cattle escape through damaged fencing and injure a driver Public liability Liability section must be active and farming activities declared
Fire destroys a dairy and halts milk production for 6 months Farm property plus business interruption Interruption must be selected with an adequate indemnity period

Optional sections and separate policies to check

Some covers can be added as optional sections within the farm pack. Others sit outside it entirely.

Optional farm pack sections (availability varies by insurer): machinery breakdown, business interruption, farm motor, domestic property, land transit, theft, livestock cover and accident and sickness benefits.

Separate policies (not part of the farm pack): crop insurance for growing crops, workers compensation for employee injury, cyber insurance for data loss and system failure, environmental liability for pollution clean-up, and marine transit for broader goods-in-transit exposures. Flood may be included, excluded or offered as an add-on depending on the insurer and the property's risk zone.

Frequently asked questions

What does farm pack insurance cover?

Farm pack insurance may cover selected farm buildings, machinery, fencing, theft, liability, land transit and business interruption, depending on the sections, assets and locations listed on the policy schedule. For a full overview, see what is farm pack insurance in Australia.

Does farm pack insurance cover tractors and machinery?

Machinery may be covered against insured events such as fire, storm, collision or theft under the property section, subject to policy terms. Internal mechanical failure requires the machinery breakdown section to be selected. Road-registered farm vehicles may require a farm motor section or separate commercial motor policy.

Does farm pack insurance cover livestock?

Livestock in transit may be covered under the land-transit section where selected. Livestock mortality on-property from disease, accident or natural death is a different exposure and may require a separate livestock section or standalone policy. Check what your policy specifically includes.

Does farm pack insurance cover crops?

Growing crops are not typically covered under a standard farm pack. Crop cover may require a specific section or standalone policy for losses from hail, frost, fire or other weather events, depending on the insurer.

Does farm pack insurance cover fencing?

Fencing may be covered against insured events such as fire or storm, subject to the farm property section. A fencing sub-limit or separate settlement basis may apply and can cap the payout well below the cost of replacing fencing across the whole property. Check the per-kilometre or first-loss limit on your schedule.

Does farm pack insurance cover floods and bushfires?

Bushfire may be an insured event, subject to the selected section and policy wording. Flood definitions and availability vary between insurers. Some policies include flood, some offer it as an add-on, and some exclude it for properties in high-risk zones. Check the policy wording.

Does farm pack insurance cover machinery breakdown?

Machinery breakdown is an optional section, not part of standard property cover. Where selected, it may respond to sudden and unforeseen internal mechanical or electrical failure. Wear and tear, gradual deterioration and lack of maintenance are excluded.

Does farm pack insurance include public liability?

Public and products liability is available as a section within the farm pack, subject to the policy terms and the declared farming activities. It may cover third-party injury, neighbouring property damage, escaped livestock incidents and produce-related illness. Farm-gate sales, farm stays and contractor activity may need to be specifically disclosed.

Can farm pack insurance cover multiple or leased locations?

It may, where each location is declared on the schedule and accepted by the insurer. A leased block, agistment property or secondary storage site that isn't listed may not be covered. Clarify with your broker who is responsible for buildings, fencing, machinery and liability under the lease.
