What Does Mobile Plant Insurance Cover?

Mobile plant insurance may cover listed or declared machinery against accidental damage, theft, fire, vandalism, rollover and specified transit risks. Attachments, hired-in plant, road-risk liability, business interruption and mechanical breakdown may require separate sections or extensions, depending on the insurer and policy structure.

Mobile plant insurance can involve several different cover sections. Material damage addresses physical loss or damage to the machine itself. Breakdown, third-party liability, hired-in plant and downtime may sit in other sections, extensions or a combined plant program, depending on how the insurer packages the product. Knowing which section each risk sits under is what stops a claim landing in the wrong place. For the full product overview including who needs it and how to arrange cover, see what is mobile plant and equipment insurance. upcover arranges mobile plant and equipment insurance for eligible Australian businesses (AFSL 539078).

What damage does mobile plant insurance cover?

The material-damage section of a mobile plant policy may cover the following, each with its own conditions, limits and exclusions.

Accidental damage, collision and rollover. An excavator boom strikes a structure on site and damages the hydraulic assembly. A skid steer tips on sloped residential ground. Rollover is a practical risk for plant operating on uneven terrain, and the operator's licence, experience and declared activities all matter. Damage to another machine or third-party property may involve the liability section or the other owner's insurance rather than material damage.

Theft. A mini excavator is taken from a secured yard overnight. Theft cover may apply, but security conditions such as an anti-theft device requirement can determine whether the claim proceeds.

Malicious damage and vandalism. Hydraulic lines are cut in a storage yard, or panels and windows are smashed overnight. Malicious damage cover may respond where the machine is listed and the damage is deliberate third-party action rather than wear or misuse. Storage security and site access controls can affect the claim, particularly on open or unstaffed sites.

Fire. An accidental ignition damages the engine bay and cab. The cause matters. The policy may distinguish between the failed component and resulting fire damage, so an external insured event may be treated differently from damage arising from an internal mechanical failure. Depending on the wording, the breakdown extension may be relevant.

Storm and weather damage. Hail or storm debris damages listed machinery, subject to the policy's weather provisions. Flood is treated differently between policies and may need specific inclusion.

Transit. A machine shifts on a trailer while being moved between sites. Transit cover may apply where the transit is declared and the machine properly secured, including during loading and unloading. Do not assume the tow vehicle's commercial motor policy covers the plant being carried; check both wordings.

Does mobile plant insurance cover attachments and trailers?

Buckets, augers, breakers, grapples, forks, quick hitches, hydraulic breakers, GPS units and machine-control systems all add value to the machine, and they all need to be accounted for in the policy. The key questions are whether each attachment is individually listed or falls within an unspecified-items sub-limit, whether theft cover applies when the attachment is detached from the machine, whether hired attachments are included, and whether the plant trailer itself is declared.

Undeclared attachments are a common gap. If a valuable rock breaker is not listed and does not fall within an applicable attachment limit, it may sit outside the claim.

A plant trailer may fall under the mobile plant section, commercial motor or another section depending on its registration status and the wording. Do not assume declaring it automatically places it within the plant policy.

What optional extensions can mobile plant insurance include?

Depending on the insurer, these exposures may be offered as extensions, separate sections or components of a combined mobile plant program.

  • Hired-in plant. May cover machines you rent and are contractually responsible for, including continuing hire charges in some wordings. A hire-company damage waiver is not necessarily insurance and may leave theft, transit and liability exposures untouched.
  • Dry hire and wet hire structuring. Some wordings exclude dry hire. Where it is accepted, conditions around customer vetting, geographic limits and overnight storage may apply. Wet hire creates operator and liability exposures that the policy needs to reflect.
  • Machinery breakdown. May cover sudden internal mechanical or electrical failure. Without it, a hydraulic pump or engine failure with no external cause may not be covered under material damage.
  • Road-risk liability and public liability alignment. Road-risk may apply where registered or conditionally registered plant operates on public roads. Injury or property damage caused by the machine to others sits under liability, not material damage. Depending on the insurer, liability may be packaged within the plant program or require a separate policy.
  • Business interruption, increased cost of working and replacement-hire costs. Depending on wording, cover may contribute towards specified downtime costs, increased costs of working or replacement-hire expenses while a listed machine is off the road.
  • Recovery and towing. May cover the cost of recovering a machine from a rollover, bog or inaccessible site and transporting it for repair.
  • Agreed or replacement value. Some policies may offer these as an alternative to market value for newer machines, where available.

How do mobile plant insurance claims work in practice?

These scenarios are illustrative only. They are not real upcover client claims. All claims are subject to policy terms, conditions and exclusions.

Excavator theft, security conditions met. A listed excavator with an immobiliser fitted is stolen from a fenced site. The theft section may respond where the security conditions match the policy requirements.

Skid-steer rollover on residential work. A skid steer tips on a sloped driveway during a declared landscaping job. The material-damage section may respond, and recovery costs may be included where the policy provides for them.

Engine-bay fire: cause matters. A fire destroys the cab. If it started from an accidental external source, the fire section may respond. If it traces to an internal mechanical fault, the breakdown extension may be needed instead. The cause investigation decides which section applies.

Hired-in excavator damaged during loading. A rented excavator is damaged while being loaded onto a float at your site. The hired-in plant section may respond, subject to the hire agreement, the contractual responsibility and the insured value.

Frequently asked questions

Does mobile plant insurance cover mechanical breakdown?

Internal mechanical or electrical failure is commonly excluded from the material-damage section. A machinery breakdown extension may be available where sudden internal failure needs to be covered. The fire-versus-breakdown boundary is worth checking, because an engine fire caused by an internal fault may be treated differently from one with an external cause.

Is my machine covered on a trailer or float?

Transit cover may apply where the journey is declared and the machine properly secured, including during loading and unloading. Do not assume the tow vehicle's commercial motor policy covers the plant being carried. Check both wordings.

Are buckets and attachments covered?

They may be, where listed individually or within an unspecified-items sub-limit. Check whether theft cover applies when the attachment is detached from the machine, and whether the limit is adequate for the total attachment value.

Is theft from a job site covered?

It may be, subject to the policy's security conditions. Requirements such as immobilisers, tracking or secure-storage provisions may apply, and theft cover may be affected where a required measure was not in place.

Does mobile plant insurance cover damage my machine causes to others?

Generally not under the material-damage section. Injury or property damage caused to third parties usually sits under a public liability policy or a dedicated plant liability section. Depending on the insurer, that may be part of a combined plant program or a separate policy.

Is hired or rented equipment covered?

A hired-in plant section may cover machines you rent and are contractually responsible for. Note that a hire-company damage waiver is not necessarily insurance, and it may not respond to theft, transit or liability exposures. Check the hire agreement against the policy.
