Occupational Therapist Insurance Cost Australia: $30–$43/Month

How much does occupational therapist insurance cost in Australia?

Occupational therapists typically pay $363 to $551 a year, or around $30 to $43 a month, based on upcover's analysis of over 500 bound OT-related policies. The median annual premium was $430. Most policies analysed combined Professional Indemnity and Public Liability, so these figures are most useful as a guide to combined occupational therapist liability insurance rather than standalone Public Liability.

For practising registered occupational therapists, appropriate Professional Indemnity arrangements form part of registration requirements. Therefore, the important question is not just how cheaply you can purchase insurance, but rather what the appropriate coverage for your specific scope of practice will cost.

Median annual premium $430
Typical monthly instalment $30–$43

How upcover analysed the data

  • upcover analysed over 500 bound policies matched to occupational therapy-related occupation labels.
  • The sample includes OT-specific labels and combination labels involving occupational therapy and other allied health roles.
  • The large majority were written on a combined Professional Indemnity and Public Liability product.
  • Typical range means the 25th to 75th percentile, so one quarter of policies sat below the range and one quarter above it.
  • Annual and monthly figures come from different groups of policies and are not a like-for-like comparison of payment methods.
  • Cyber insurance, workers' compensation, tools and equipment and other separate policies are not included.

What affects occupational therapist insurance costs?

The price of occupational therapist insurance can vary based on how your practice operates.

Insurers may consider:

  • Annual revenue or billings
  • Services provided, including assessments, reports and therapy
  • Assistive technology, including recommending, trialling or supplying equipment
  • Where you work, such as clinics, homes, schools and workplaces
  • Whether the policy covers an individual practitioner, a practice entity or both
  • Number and type of practitioners
  • Professional indemnity and public liability limits
  • Claims, complaints or regulatory history

Accurately describing the work you perform matters because your Professional Indemnity arrangements should reflect your actual scope and locations of practice.

How do Professional Indemnity and Public liability limits affect the cost?

Professional Indemnity and Public Liability are commonly arranged together for occupational therapists, but changing each limit affects the premium differently.

Take a separate illustrative low-turnover quote scenario: an occupational therapist with around $10,000 in declared private-practice revenue and Professional Indemnity initially held at $1 million. Moving Public Liability from $5 million to $10 million lifted the annual-payment quote from $117 to $129 a year, or about $12 to $13 a month. Raising it further to $20 million brought the quote to $164 a year, around $17 a month. Across that full range, from $5 million to $20 million, Public Liability cover added $47 a year.

In the same scenario, keeping Public Liability at $20 million but raising Professional Indemnity from $1 million to $20 million lifted the annual-payment quote to $511 a year, with a monthly-payment quote of about $52. In this example, raising the Professional Indemnity limit affected the premium more than raising the Public Liability limit did.

Available limits and pricing vary by insurer. The right limit should reflect your practice, contracts and registration requirements rather than price alone.

Does insuring an occupational therapy (OT) practice cost more than insuring a sole practitioner's practice?

In upcover's dataset, policies labelled 'Occupational Therapy Service' had a median annual premium of $977 compared with $388 for policies labelled 'Occupational Therapist'.

That does not mean every practice will pay more.

The service sample was much smaller, and the dataset does not consistently record headcount, revenue, locations or business complexity. It shows a difference between the groups without proving what caused it.

If you operate through a practice or employ or contract other occupational therapists, make sure that the policy correctly reflects both the practice entity and the people and services being insured.

Can occupational therapists pay insurance monthly?

Yes. Occupational therapists can use monthly payment plans through upcover. The typical instalments will be around $30 to $43 a month, but they can vary depending on your requirements and insurance coverage.

The study does not indicate which payment option is cheaper, as the policies differ between monthly and annual payments.

To compare payment costs accurately, look at the annual-payment and monthly-payment options on your quote.

What other insurance costs are not included?

The $363 to $551 annual range relates primarily to the main Professional Indemnity and Public Liability arrangement. Other covers can add to your total insurance spend depending on how you operate.

Cyber Insurance: may be relevant where you hold health information, assessment reports, functional capacity assessments or NDIS-related records.

Tools and equipment: may be relevant for therapy equipment, assessment kits, laptops or loan stock.

Workers Compensation: check the requirements that apply under your state or territory scheme if you employ or engage workers.

These costs are not included in the headline OT insurance figures above.

Frequently asked questions

How much does occupational therapist insurance cost per month?

Monthly instalments in upcover's OT-related policy data typically ranged from $30 to $43, with a median of about $34. Most policies analysed combined Professional Indemnity and Public Liability.

How much is Professional Indemnity insurance for an occupational therapist?

Most OT-related policies analysed bundled Professional Indemnity with Public Liability, so the typical $363 to $551 annual range should not be treated as a standalone Professional Indemnity price.

How much does occupational therapist Public Liability insurance cost?

The main policy study does not establish a standalone national Public Liability price because most policies analysed combined it with professional indemnity.

In the separate low-turnover example above, annual-payment quotes ranged from $117 for $5 million Public Liability to $164 for $20 million Public Liability, with Professional Indemnity held at $1 million. These figures are illustrative rather than a market benchmark.
