Osteopath insurance matters because hands-on treatment carries real risk. A patient can allege an injury from a manual technique, a dry needling session can lead to a complication, or someone can slip during a home visit. Registered osteopaths must also have professional indemnity insurance arrangements that meet the Osteopathy Board of Australia's registration standard.
Osteopaths typically pay $513 to $1,217 a year, or around $50 to $138 a month, based on a review of over 370 osteopath-related policies arranged through upcover. The median annual premium was $869.
Data reviewed: August 2026. Figures are indicative only, not quotes.
For registration requirements, techniques covered and what osteopath insurance includes, see our insurance guide for osteopaths in Australia.
Nearly all of these policies were written on the same bundled healthcare professionals' civil liability product that combines professional indemnity and public liability. So these figures are best read as a guide to combined osteopath liability insurance rather than standalone public liability.
The middle 50% of annual premiums reviewed sat between $513 and $1,217, with a median of $869. On monthly payment plans, the middle 50% of instalments ran $50 to $138, with a median of about $86.
Most osteopaths hold professional indemnity and public liability together on one bundled policy, so these figures reflect that combined arrangement. Osteopath professional indemnity insurance is designed to respond to claims that your professional treatment or advice has caused a patient harm or loss. Osteopath public liability insurance may respond to third-party injury or property damage, such as a patient slipping in your clinic or during a home visit. Both are subject to the terms of the policy. Because they are usually bundled, the figures don't establish a standalone price for either cover.

This is based on over 370 bound osteopath-related policies arranged through upcover, matched to occupation labels such as 'osteopath', 'osteopathy', and combinations like 'dry needling' and 'personal training'. Typical range' means the 25th to 75th percentile, so one quarter of policies sat below the range and one quarter above it. Cyber insurance, workers' compensation, tools and equipment and other separate policies aren't included.
The price of osteopath insurance can vary based on how your practice operates. Insurers may consider:
Accurate descriptions of the techniques you use and your scope of practice are important, as they should be reflected in your professional indemnity arrangements.
Yes. Policies that included dry needling were higher, but other underwriting factors may differ between the groups. The figures don't isolate dry needling as the cause of the difference.
Based on the policies reviewed, those labelled 'osteopath' had a median annual premium of $863, with a median monthly instalment of $87. Policies that included dry needling had a median annual premium of $914, with a median monthly instalment of $103.
If you use dry needling or plan to, make sure your insurer has accurate details of the technique and your training, since cover needs to reflect your actual scope of practice.
Professional indemnity and public liability are commonly arranged together for osteopaths, but changing each limit affects the premium differently. In the examples below, the annual and monthly figures come from separate quote options. The monthly figures are not the annual premium divided by 12.
Holding professional indemnity at $1 million and raising public liability from $5 million to $10 million moved the annual-payment quote from $293 to $317 a year, or about $30 to $32 a month. Raising it further to $20 million brought the quote to $412 a year, around $42 a month. Across that full range, public liability cover alone added $119 a year.
In a separate scenario with public liability held at $5 million, raising professional indemnity from $1 million to $20 million lifted the annual-payment quote to $951 a year, about $96 a month. Keeping public liability at $20 million alongside that $20 million professional indemnity limit brought the quote to $1,278 a year, around $128 a month.
Across these examples, raising the professional indemnity limit moved the premium by a larger amount than raising the public liability limit did. Available limits and pricing vary by insurer. The right limit should reflect your practice, contracts and registration requirements rather than price alone. Osteopaths can use monthly payment plans through upcover. The median total cost across a 12-month monthly plan was $1,037, compared with a median of $869 for policies paid annually upfront.
These figures are derived from different groups of policies and do not represent the same policies being compared under two different payment methods. So the figures can't establish whether paying monthly or annually works out cheaper for a given policy. To compare your options accurately, look at the annual-payment and monthly-payment quotes side by side.
The $513 to $1,217 annual range covers the main professional indemnity and public liability arrangement. Other covers can add to your total spend depending on how you operate. Cyber insurance may be relevant where you hold patient health records. A business pack or tools and equipment cover may suit osteopaths who own clinic premises or treatment equipment. Workers' compensation requirements depend on your state or territory scheme if you employ staff.
upcover arranges insurance for osteopaths across Australia, including professional indemnity, public and products liability, cyber insurance and other business cover.

Monthly instalments typically ran $50 to $138, with a median of about $86, based on the policies reviewed. Most combine professional indemnity and public liability.
Most osteopath policies bundle professional indemnity with public liability, so the typical $513 to $1,217 annual range shouldn't be treated as a standalone professional indemnity price for osteopaths.
Most osteopath policies bundle public liability with professional indemnity, so there's no standalone price. In the limit example above, annual quotes ran from $293 for $5 million cover to $412 for $20 million. These figures are illustrative only.
Policies that included dry needling had a higher median premium ($914) than those labelled 'osteopath' alone ($863). This shows a difference between the groups rather than proof that dry needling alone caused it.
Osteopaths registered with the Osteopathy Board of Australia must have professional indemnity insurance arrangements that meet the Board's registration standard and make the relevant declaration when renewing registration. The board can request evidence that those arrangements meet the standard.
This article is general information only and doesn't consider your objectives, financial situation or needs. Premium figures come from a review of bound osteopath-related policies arranged through upcover, reviewed in August 2026. The sample includes 'osteopath', 'osteopathy' and 'combination' labels involving dry needling and other modalities. The large majority were written on a combined professional indemnity and public liability product. Figures are indicative only and do not constitute a quote. Annual and monthly figures describe different groups of policies. Cover-limit examples are a separate illustrative quoting scenario, with annual-payment and monthly-payment figures taken from separate quotes. Other insurance costs are not included in the headline figures. Cover depends on the terms, conditions, limits and exclusions of the individual policy. Whether your professional indemnity arrangements meet registration requirements is a matter for the Osteopathy Board of Australia or an appropriately qualified adviser. upcover Pty Ltd, ABN 17 628 197 437, is a Corporate Authorised Representative (CAR 1299211) of Experience Insurance Services Pty Ltd, ABN 41 657 596 506, AFSL 539078.
