Material Alteration

Material Alteration refers to a significant modification, change, or tampering with a product after it leaves the manufacturer's control that substantially affects the product's safety, performance, or characteristics. Material alteration may relieve the original manufacturer of liability if the alteration was the cause of the injury and was not reasonably foreseeable. The determination of whether an alteration is 'material' depends on whether it affected the part of the product that caused the injury.
