What is Zero Tolerance Policy | Insurance glossary by upcover

Zero tolerance policies are used by organisations to enforce firm boundaries around conduct such as workplace harassment, discrimination, violence, substance abuse, or fraud. The policy removes managerial discretion by prescribing fixed consequences — typically immediate termination — for defined breaches, irrespective of context or history. A documented and consistently enforced policy may support an insurer's assessment of an organisation's governance under management liability and EPL coverage. However, organisations must apply such policies in accordance with procedural fairness obligations under the Fair Work Act 2009 (Cth) to avoid unfair dismissal claims arising from terminations made under the policy.
