XML Encryption

XML Encryption is a W3C standard that specifies a process for encrypting structured XML data to ensure confidentiality during storage or transmission. It is commonly used in web services, APIs, and data exchange protocols where sensitive information must be protected in transit between systems. Failure to implement appropriate encryption for data in transit may constitute inadequate security under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and could affect both regulatory exposure and cyber insurance claims where data interception results in a notifiable data breach. Insurers underwriting technology and data-intensive businesses may consider the encryption standards applied to data exchange mechanisms as part of their technical security assessments.
